Sun Damage and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in Ottawa
Fall is the perfect season to reassess your skin care plan and for many of us in Ottawa, it is the ideal time to begin our photorejuvenation treatments with intense pulsed light (IPL).
What is IPL exactly?
IPL (also known as BroadBand Light™ or photo facial) is a light-based treatment that can improve brown spots, sunspots, and small veins on the face with minimal to no downtime.
Some of us may remember the days of sitting on the beach, soaking up the sun, and running about without hats or sunscreen. Years ago, the sun-kissed skin was ‘in’, but what many didn’t realize at that time was the effects this sun exposure would have on our skin in the future. Unfortunately, most of our sun damage and pigmentation changes occur before the age of 18.
In Ottawa, intense pulsed light is an effective treatment for sunspots, sun damage, and irregular pigmentation as well as rosacea and acne. The energy from the pulsed light breaks down the melanin in brown spots into tiny particles pushing the pigment to the surface where it naturally sloughs off within a week after an IPL treatment. The results of IPL include a more even tone appearance, minimized acne, rosacea, and sun-related skin damage. IPL is also a great option for patients in Ottawa, who love the sun but not the consequences of UV rays such as sunspots.
IPL should be tailored to your skin’s needs. Not all intense pulsed light systems are created equally. At Concept Medical we use the science behind an innovative, powerful, photorejuvenation treatment that utilizes IPL known as BroadBand Light™ or BBL™. Furthermore, our medical team can guide you through the proper use of sun protection and skin care to help improve your skin’s youthful glow even further.
In 2013, Dr. P. Bitters performed visual and clinical evaluations in patients following BroadBand Light™ (BBL™) treatments. Physicians evaluated BBL™ treated patients and found they appeared 9 years younger than their actual age after they kept up with BBL treatments over time. The results were that “patients who maintain a regular regimen of BBL treatments annually can reduce and delay the long-term signs of skin aging in a way that looks very natural” – Dr. Bitters.
