What is PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)?
PRP is a regenerative procedure that has been in use since the 1980’s. Most recently PRP has been used to treat thinning hair or hair loss in men and women. PRP is thought to help stimulate hair growth utilizing your own platelets, plasma, and growth factors. It is considered a non-surgical procedure, with very few side effects. Common side effects are localized injection site tenderness and bruising. Rare and more serious side effects are possible. PRP may promote a longer growth phase for existing hair, may reduce hair fallout, and may help to reverse hair thinning. However, as with all cosmetic treatments, individual results do vary, and risks are possible. Please ensure you have a consultation with your provider prior to any treatment.
How does a PRP treatment work?
PRP involves a 3-step process where a sample of your blood is first drawn. The sample is then placed in a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly, separating fluids of different densities) which separates the blood into 3 parts (platelet-rich plasma, red blood cells, and platelet-poor plasma.). The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then drawn up into a sterile syringe and injected into targeted areas of the scalp where increased hair growth is needed. The entire treatment takes just over 45 minutes from start to finish.
How many PRP treatments do I need?
Ideally 3-4 treatments are required, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. PRP is not a permanent solution for hair loss. If you want the results to continue you will have to proceed with maintenance appointments every 6-12 months. Some patients do note improvements prior to their 4th treatment. However, as with all cosmetic treatments, please note that individual results do vary, and risks are possible. At Concept Medical, we have a PRP ‘success rate’ of 85%, meaning that 85% of patients undergoing PRP are pleased with their results. Please ensure you have a consultation with your provider prior to any treatment.
Who will perform my PRP?
At Concept Medical our highly trained and experienced Registered Nurse, Jennifer, performs our PRP hair loss treatments. She has done over 150 PRP treatments this year alone. We always start with a detailed consultation prior to any treatment. Our physician, Dr. Hetz will discuss your expectations, thoroughly outline the procedure, risks and benefits prior to your first treatment.
Is PRP Painful?
PRP is a relatively comfortable procedure that requires no downtime, or numbing. That being said, we do use a very small microneedle for the injections, so you do feel a small prick with each injection. It’s not like a day at the spa, but overall very tolerable! After your treatment you can leave the office and return to your normal daily activities. It’s a good idea to come to your appointment well hydrated and make sure you have eaten prior to the procedure. This helps our nurse ensure she is able to collect and adequate amount of blood for the treatment.
What should I avoid after PRP?
The post-treatment care after PRP is pretty straight forward. Most patients feel mild tenderness afterwards, but typically are able to go about their day. We do ask that after a PRP treatment you don’t wash your hair until the following day. Otherwise there are no other restrictions. You can have your treatment and return to your normal daily routine.
When will I see results after PRP?
Results can be seen as early as 4 weeks after your first PRP treatment. However, we find that most patients notice an improvement after their 3rd or 4th treatment. At Concept Medical, 85% of our patients have been pleased. However, this means that 15% of patients are displeased, and do not notice appreciable results. We like to ensure patients are aware of this, and believe that transparency is paramount to optimal patient care.
PRP is only one hair loss treatment option for patients but is less invasive than surgical options such as hair transplants. It’s important to remember that individual results do vary, and risks are possible.
How much does PRP cost?
Many factors determine the cost of PRP treatments such as geographic location and the type of PRP system being used. PRP systems do vary in platelet concentration, and possibly efficacy. The specific type of PRP system being used should be discussed during your consultation. At Concept Medical in Ottawa (as of November 2019) PRP is priced at $700 per treatment or $2400 for a package of four treatments. This is comparable pricing to most other clinics in Ottawa. Note, pricing subject to change. A group of UK scientists established the following: men who inherit two specific genetic sites, are seven times more likely to develop baldness by the age of 40 than the others. Perhaps some will decide to use Finasteride-based drugs, any of which you can choose at Paul Brown Hawaii, which can slow down, stop or even reverse the process of baldness when they still have a good hair.
Is PRP covered by insurance?
Typically, PRP is typically not covered by private insurance plans, and is not covered by OHIP.
Who is an ideal PRP candidate?
Many patients experiencing thinning hair or hair loss may be good candidates for PRP, especially those experiencing the early onset of hair loss. However, it is important to see a physician prior to ensure PRP is an appropriate treatment for your specific type of hair thinning. PRP is not a quick fix for thinning hair or hair loss but is an option for patients struggling with this condition. Patients who have more minimal loss, and are otherwise healthy generally experience more positive results. Some patients with pre-existing medical conditions should not have PRP. This should be discussed during your consultation.
