Botox® for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Botox® for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for severe, excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis can lead to loss of confidence, embarrassment, low self-esteem, and decreased overall quality of life. Hyperhidrosis is not ‘just your nerves’, it is a true medical condition. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments available in Ottawa for hyperhidrosis.

Botox® is one type of medication that may be used in patients with underarm sweating. Other options including iontophoresis, topical medications, and surgery.  Please speak with your doctor about the best option for you

Excessive sweating can occur anywhere on the body, but is most common on the underarms, hands, and feet. There are numerous treatment options available for individuals with hyperhidrosis in Ottawa, including potent antiperspirants, oral medications, Botox®, iontophoresis, and surgery in the most severe cases. At Concept Medical, we offer Botox® for the management of excessive sweating.

As with all treatments at Concept Medical, your first visit is a detailed medical consultation with one of our physicians. This consultation allows us to determine whether Botox® is an appropriate treatment for your excessive sweating. During a Botox® for hyperhidrosis treatment, small droplets of Botox are administered to the areas where your excessive sweating occurs. Many patients do not require any freezing prior to Botox® treatment, however a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic may be used to ensure your comfort during the short Botox® procedure.

Hyperhidrosis symptoms may be improved within days to weeks following Botox® treatment. However, there are some hyperhidrosis patients whose symptoms will not improve with Botox®. Improvement in excessive sweating may last up to 6 months or more following treatment.

In Ottawa, Concept Medical was one of the first clinics to offer Botox® treatment for both cosmetic concerns as well as hyperhidrosis. As with any procedure, discussing the risks and benefits of Botox® is important prior to treatment.

If you are considering treatment in Ottawa with Botox® for excessive sweating, it is important to have a medical consultation with the treating physician to thoroughly understand your condition. Individuals with certain neurological disorders should not receive Botox®. Furthermore, Botox® is not administered to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or those who have previously experienced an adverse reaction to Botox®.

Botox® for medical purposes is often covered by private insurance plans. Botox® for hyperhidrosis is not covered by OHIP. Please confirm with your private insurance provider ,prior to treatment, to ensure that Botox® for hyperhidrosis is covered.
