Botox® is approved by Health Canada to help prevent chronic migraine headaches. However, choosing the right migraine treatment depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches. At Concept Medical our physicians provide preventative treatment for chronic migraine headaches with Botox®. This is a great treatment option for patients who are not responding to other medications.
Prior to considering a consultation at Concept Medical for Botox® treatment for chronic migraine, please ensure:
- You have been investigated and diagnosed with chronic migraine by a physician;
- You have tried migraine specific medications prior to considering a consultation for Botox® treatments;
- You have confirmed with your private insurance provider that your chronic migraine treatment with therapeutic Botox® is covered. Botox® for chronic migraine is not covered by OHIP;
- You have had a referral sent from your Family Physician to Concept Medical.

Botox® is a purified protein, that when placed into certain areas of the head and neck can decrease the frequency and severity of chronic migraine headaches. At Concept Medical, in Ottawa, all Botox® for chronic migraine treatments are administered by an experienced physician.
All Botox® treatments at Concept Medical in Ottawa begin with a detailed consultation with one of our physicians. We request that a referral is sent from your family physician to the prior to your visit. A thorough physician consultation, prior to your Botox® treatment, ensures that you are a suitable candidate for Botox®. Treatment can be completed within minutes and you may return to your normal activities afterwards.
Chronic migraine symptoms are often improved within weeks of treatment. However, there are some patients whose symptoms will not improve with Botox®. Research shows that Botox® can decrease the number of headache days per month, as well as the severity of headaches while increasing function and overall quality of life. Improvement in chronic migraine symptoms may last up to 4 – 6 months following Botox® treatment.
Botox® was approved by Health Canada in 2011 for prevention of chronic migraine. Although Botox® has an excellent safety profile, it is important you thoroughly discuss the risks and possible complications with your physician prior to treatment.

Botox® for medical (non-cosmetic) treatment is regularly covered by extended health insurance plans. Botox® for chronic migraine is not covered by OHIP. Please check with your private insurance provide prior to your consultation.
