Treatment Options for Abnormal Leg Veins
Sclerotherapy is one of the most common treatment options for the appearance and symptoms of abnormal leg veins. Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment for varicose, reticular, and spider veins. Surprisingly, the most common medication used for small veins, is actually a sterile solution of salt and sugar (Sclerodex®). Fortunately, there is no downtime following the short sclerotherapy procedure, and you may resume your regular daily activities following treatment. In some patients, laser treatments (such as the Sciton® Nd:Yag laser) are effective for small telangiectasia/spider veins and reticular veins. Compression stockings are also considered a first line treatment for chronic venous insufficiency and the symptoms of abnormal veins. Compression stockings may be used alone, but are usually coupled with additional treatments, such as sclerotherapy, as part of a compressive plan. Sclerotherapy, compression therapy, and laser vein treatments are offered at Concept Medical. Today, surgery is rarely performed, given the effectiveness of non-surgical options. However, surgery may be indicated in very few, select cases. Although not offered at Concept Medical, non-OHIP covered endovenous ablation is another treatment option, reserved only for large varicose veins.
