Post-Summer Skin Check Up

Default post image

As summer begins to wind down, it may be time to take an inventory of the condition and health of your skin. Even if you have been diligent in applying your sunscreen, it is still prudent to examine your skin for any changes. In particular, as we age, many of us begin to notice what we call “age spots” or “brown spots.” There are many reasons why these spots occur. It can be hereditary, hormones, or sun damage. When it comes to these “brown spots,” there are cosmetic as well as medical concerns. If your spots are deemed to be only a cosmetic concern, Concept Medical in Ottawa offers a few options for treatment. For example, sun spots can be treated with a procedure called Photorejuvenation. Photorejuvenation (also called intense pulse light or Broadband Light) is light technology that not only minimizes brown spots and sun damage, but it also reduces fine wrinkles and enlarged pores.

Intense pulse light or Broadband Light improves redness caused by aging, rosacea, and acne scarring. Photorejuvenation simultaneously erases skin damage while improving skin tone and texture. Interestingly, studies have shown that intense pulse light or BroadBand Light can upregulate your skin’s DNA promoting more youthful skin. While reversing the damaging effects of the sun to your skin, you will also restore a more youthful appearance to your skin.

However in some instances your “age spots” could be indicative of a medical concern because the development of brown spots on the face, hands, or anywhere on the body can signal the presence of skin cancer. Upon examination, if your “brown spots” are considered to be potentially pre-cancerous or cancerous, they will require a different treatment approach. Common skin cancers treated at Concept Medical in Ottawa include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen’s disease, melanoma, and actinic keratosis.

You may require a referral from your family physician to one of our physicians at Concept Medical who may assess and manage your skin concerns. Surgical treatment of pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions is covered by OHIP. For more information, please contact us.
