Skin Tightening Treatments.

Our skin is subject to noticeable changes as years go by. From as early as our twenties, our natural renewal processes begin to slow down, which eventually leads to development of wrinkles, pigmented spots and skin laxity

What happens to skin as we age?

We are born with plentiful hyaluronic acid and collagen in our skin composition with several natural processes ensuring healthy cell regeneration. Our bodies see to our growth and healing without any conscious thought or action from us. Over time, many of these natural processes begin to slow due to a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Intrinsically, cell turnover rate slows down thereby causing increasing skin dullness, pigmentation and even congestion that can lead to adult acne. Extrinsically, long-term sun exposure (UV radiation) and environmental exposure greatly affect collagen and elastin. This, in turn, leads to a thinning of the skin and increasingly obvious skin laxity. Sun exposure also depletes our natural skin volume and decreases hyaluronic acid levels. Eyelids, brows, cheeks and jawline begin to lose natural shape, lips slowly deflate, while lines and folds gradually deepen.

How to improve skin laxity?

The foremost recommendation of Canadian dermatologists and skin specialists is to adopt daily sun protection as early on as possible. More than 90 per cent of visible skin aging can be attributed to sun damage; therefore, prevention is essential. Beyond early adoption of sun protection, we are fortunate to live in an era where corrective skin treatments can yield noticeable changes without surgery or anesthesia.

To address aging skin, a number of modalities can be used, individually or in combination, to address specific concerns. Laser treatments apply focused energy to resolve more superficial issues such as texture, tone, pore size, fine lines and pigmentation.

Advanced dermal filler techniques now allow for restoration of natural facial contours. As natural hyaluronic acid is eased back into the skin, deflated features are instantly restored. Current models for global volume restoration with dermal fillers will also help generate lift and soften the appearance of folds around the mouth and a heavy jawline.

Lastly, focused ultrasonic energy – such as an Ultherapy® treatment – will promote a natural skin contraction and stimulate collagen and elastin. This particular device is uniquely approved to lift the skin. Ultherapy® is often provided as a full face treatment but can be employed as a targeted solution for brow or chin/neck lifting as well. Ultrasonic energy generates a thermal environment proven to affect skin structures at key depths. This stimulation results in both short-term and long-term collagen and elastin renewal – new, youthful connective fibers that tighten and lift skin.
