The rejuvenating benefits of fractional skin resurfacing.

There comes a time when maintaining rejuvenated skin requires more than anti-aging lotions and potions. If you’re contemplating next steps, medical lasers may be on your radar. We’re fortunate to live at a time when laser technology has evolved to a point where the risks have been minimized and the results maximized. One such technological advancement is fractional laser resurfacing. In this article, we share with Ottawa patients how fractional laser technology can benefit the long-term health and youth of their skin.

How is fractional laser resurfacing unique?

The first skin resurfacing lasers were known as ablative CO2 lasers. While this technology is still helpful to address specific skin concerns, it is quite invasive, as the laser beam works like a scalpel that removes the top layer of the skin. The risks and recovery time associated with this treatment made it a less appealing option for patients.

In recent years, fractional laser technology was developed, offering a significantly less invasive alternative to the first-wave of laser skin resurfacing technology. In the case of fractional lasers, the laser beam is emitted into the skin in a scattered manner. These pulses treat the skin’s dermis, bypassing the epidermis so that the top layer of exposed skin is left intact. The fractional laser beams activate a renewal response in the skin as it heals from these “micro-wounds.”

Areas of sun damage become darkened and are pushed up the skin’s surface. Some mild redness and swelling may occur immediately after the treatment, with some flaking and crusting arising over the period of seven to ten days post-treatment. Once the initial healing is completed, the fresh skin that is revealed is incredibly soft, and the skin tone is noticeably improved.

Depending on the current state of your skin, more than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired rejuvenation.

What are the benefits of fractional laser resurfacing for my skin?

  • Smooths fine lines and reduces the depth of wrinkles
  • Lightens pigmentation for a more uniform skin tone
  • Refines pores
  • Improves skin texture

So if you’re ready to take the next step in facial rejuvenation, a fractional skin resurfacing treatment is certainly an effective and safe option to consider.
