Cosmetic dermal filler gels-used to provide volume and fullness to the skin and lips-are made of a unique, biodegradable, non-animal-based product referred to as hyaluronic acid. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body, this product is completely compatible with human hyaluronic acid. Name brand hyaluronic acid products available in the Canadian marketplace include Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm® and Teosyal®.
Hyaluronic acid-derived cosmetic dermal fillers have been used safely worldwide since 1996. Because they are non-animal-based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission, or of allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to common foods such as beef, chicken and eggs.
A medical physician injects small amounts of cosmetic dermal filler gel into the skin using an ultrafine needle. To optimize your comfort during this quick, simple procedure, the physician may anesthetize the treatment area. The effects, which are long lasting but not permanent, can be seen instantaneously.
Common side effects include temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days. Post-treatment care will be discussed at the time of consultation.
Cosmetic dermal hyaluronic acid filler gels are long lasting but, ultimately, biodegradable and non-permanent. Though individual results may vary, cosmetic hyaluronic acid dermal filler gels can last between six and 12 months before they are completely reabsorbed by the body.
