What are Spider Veins?

Default post image

Spider veins, which are also called thread veins or telangiectasia, are small, dilated veins within the skin and near the skin’s surface. Spider veins may be red, purple or blue in colour. Spider veins are most often found on the legs, and fortunately are easily treated at Concept Medical in Ottawa. These clusters of veins are most commonly found on the outsides and back of legs. Spider veins are not the same as varicose veins. Spider veins are usually harmless and are not painful or associated with any symptoms. However, some people do report discomfort, burning, or aching associated with their smaller leg spider veins, especially after standing for long period of time. Both men and women can have spider veins, although they are much more common in women. It is estimated that bout 50% of adults have some spider veins. Although spider veins are often genetic, factors such as pregnancy, hormones, and prolonged standing can worsen spider veins. There are a few effective treatment options for spider veins, both offered at Concept Medical in Ottawa. Sclerotherapy is considered the first option for spider veins. With this procedure, a small amount of medication is injected into the spider vein. If done by a trained experienced physician, sclerotherapy causes the veins to close off and fade over a period of weeks. Sclerotherapy is considered a very safe and effective option for spider veins on your legs. Laser vein treatment is other effective option. With laser leg vein treatment, a laser beam is used to close off the vein from the surface. No injections are used, and this treatment is very effective for small spider veins. Again, ensure that this procedure is done by a highly trained medical professional such as those at Concept Medical in Ottawa.
